KY Historic Preservation Review Board to meet Thursday at Lexington History Museum

Board reviews, recommends nominations to the National Register of Historic Places

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The next meeting of the Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board will take place at 10 a.m. (EST) Thursday, May 15 at the Lexington History Museum (the former Fayette County Courthouse), 215 W. Main Street.  The meeting is open to the public.

The review board is charged with hearing and considering nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.  During Thursday's meeting, seven sites in six counties will be proposed for listing, including the Hollywood Terrace Historic District in Lexington, an item tabled from the December 13 meeting due to the extraordinary length of that agenda, when more than 20 nominations were presented.
 
Administered by the National Park Service and state historic preservation offices, the National Register is the nation's official list of historic and archaeological resources deemed worthy of preservation.  Kentucky has the fourth highest number of National Register listings in the nation – more than 3,200 listings of districts, sites and structures encompassing more than 42,000 historic features.  The National Register program in Kentucky is administered by the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office.

Nominations to be considered by the review board Thursday are:  

Clark County
Woodford-Fishback-Venable Farm, 5696 Combs Ferry Road, Winchester

Fayette County
Hollywood Terrace Historic District

Garrard County
Dr. John Edwards House, 572 Danville Street, Lancaster

Jefferson County
Mary Alice Hadley House, 1638 Story Avenue, Louisville
Progress School, 200 Wood Road, Louisville

Logan County
Rhea Stadium, corner of 9th and Summer streets, Russellville

Oldham County
Ross-Hollenbach Farm, 4701 S. KY 1694, Brownsboro vicinity

Nominations approved for listing by the review board are forwarded for final consideration to the Park Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, which usually issues a determination of listing within 60 to 90 days.

National Register listing can be applied to buildings, objects, structures, districts and archaeological sites, and proposed sites must be significant in architecture, engineering, American history or culture, or possess a special role in the development of our country.  The status does not affect property ownership rights but does provide a measure of protection against adverse impacts from federally funded projects.  Owners of National Register properties may also qualify for federal or state tax credits for certified rehabilitation of these properties or by making a charitable contribution of preservation easements.
