Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea’s Satellite Store at WEG Offers Musical Performance and Artisan Demonstrations Sept. 27 - 30

A week of exciting activity is planned Sept. 27-30, at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea’s Satellite Store in the Kentucky Proud Product Pavilion at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Demonstrating artisans will create baskets, oil paintings and pottery as well as providing a musical performance.

On Monday, Sept. 27 from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Janet Northern of Mt. Vernon will demonstrate how she creates baskets from Hickory bark and Louie Northern will demonstrate oil painting. Janet Northern gathers her own basket making materials by cutting down a Pig Nut Hickory in the spring, hauling the tree into her yard and removing the inner layer of bark to make her baskets. She will be creating baskets from this harvested bark during her demonstration.

Also, from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, Louie Northern will be demonstrating oil painting. Northern uses both brushes and a palette knife to create his paintings using subject matter that comes from familiar surroundings on his 300 acre Rockcastle County farm. Northern also paints more non-objective subjects, playing with color and texture.

On Tuesday, Sept. 28 from 10:30 -a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Lexington musician Carla Van Hoose will be playing guitar and singing, while cookbook author Pam Whinnery will be signing Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities.

Van Hoose plays a blend of many types of American music – dipping into the repertoire of Folk music, Blues, Bluegrass and occasionally a bit of Rock and Roll. She is drawn to music that conveys feeling, with the lyrics and music weaving together a story or tale.

Cookbook author Pam Whinnery of Paducah, has put together a cookbook that is a collection of the personal recipes of celebrities from all across the state. Recipes for every category of cooking are included, along with specific dishes that are famous from regions, locations and festivals throughout the Bluegrass state.

On Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Marianne Brown of Lawrenceburg will demonstrate how she decorates her wheel thrown pottery with the decorative stamps she has created. Her equestrian themed stamps will be used to emboss her pottery rims and surfaces.

To round out the week, on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Jan Treesh of Lexington will demonstrate reed basketry. Treesh uses both flat and round reeds and traditional weaving techniques along with commercial dyes when designing her functional and decorative baskets.

Visitors with general admission tickets will be able to see creativity come to life every day at the Kentucky Artisan Center Satellite Store where works by more than 400 Kentucky artisans will be available for sale. Kentucky authors and artisans will demonstrate, sign their books or perform on site each day from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The Kentucky Artisan Center Satellite Store will be open from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. except on Sept. 25 when it will be open until 10 p.m.; Oct. 5 when it will close at 5:30 p.m.; and on Oct.10 when it will close at 5 p.m.

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is located at 975 Walnut Meadow Road just off I-75 at exit 77 (Berea), with exhibits, shopping and travel information areas, open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the café is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
