The Kentucky Human Rights Commission asks the public to make nominations for the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame
The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights is accepting nominations for the 2012 Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame now through June 15.
The commission will hold the inductions ceremony in October this year in Louisville, Ky.
The Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame was initiated in 2000 to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, which is now 52 years old, and is the state authority that enforces the Kentucky Civil Rights Act. Since 2000, the commission has held intermittent inductions to its Hall of Fame to honor Kentucky men and women who have helped achieve or further civil rights and improve the lives of people that laws against discrimination protect.
There have been 118 inductees into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame since the first inductions. President Abraham Lincoln, Whitney Young of the National Urban League, Governors Bert T. Combs and Edward Breathitt, human rights leaders Anne Braden, Carl Braden, Rev. Louis Coleman and Sister Lupe Arciniega are among the inductees.
Members of the public age 18 and older are asked to make nominations for a person they believe should be inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame.
Nominees for the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame must have shown exemplary leadership and achievements in civil rights in Kentucky. Nominators are asked to submit the name, address, phone number, biography, picture and three letters of recommendation of the nominee. The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights will also need the name, address and phone number of the nominator. Newspaper, magazine and other articles that describe the nominee and his or her work are also accepted.
The inductees will be selected by an independent panel of judges from throughout the state of Kentucky.
Nomination forms and guidelines for the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame are listed on the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights website at www.kchr.ky.gov
