Today in the Kentucky State Capitol Rotunda at 2 pm, Governor Steve Beshear will give remarks for the Kentucky Human Rights Commission 50th Anniversary recognition. Also speaking will be Georgia Davis Powers, former Kentucky senator, Sara Combs, wife of the late Gov. Bertram T. Combs, and Linda Breathitt, daughter of the late Gov. Edward T. (Ned) Breathitt. Everyone is invited!

Also, visit the Kentucky State Capitol Mezzinine to view the Kentucky Human Rights Commission display of photos and documents pertaining to its half-century history! The display is on exhibit throughout the day.

Gov. Beshear will also sign a proclamation in honor of the first state human rights commission in the southern United States.

Gov. Bert Combs created the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights on March 21, 1960, and Gov. Ned Breathitt signed into passage the Kentucky Civil Rights Act on January 27, 1966. The Kentucky General Assembly passed the vote to create the commission on March 18, 1960.

The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights is the government agency that enforces the Kentucky Civil Rights Act and other laws that make discrimination illegal.
