Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Department of Corrections Commissioner John D. Rees today announced that James M. Schomig, a 28-year veteran of the Corrections profession, has been named Deputy Commissioner for the Department. He will be responsible for supervision of support services in the areas of administrative services, corrections training, budget management, correctional industries, offender information and information technology.

“Jim Schomig is a top-notch Corrections professional,” said Rees. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our management team.”

Schomig began his career in corrections as a Correctional Officer at the Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, Illinois, a maximum-security prison. He rose through the ranks in the Illinois correctional system and served as warden of four state prisons, including the 1,800 bed maximum-security prison in Pontiac, Ill. He also oversaw the construction of a 2,000-bed prison in Lawrence County, Ill.

In 2002, Schomig joined the Nevada Department of Corrections and before coming to Kentucky, served as warden of two prisons there.

While in Illinois, he was a member of the Department of Corrections Training Academy Education Advisory Board, which monitors college-credited courses offered at the academy, and also assisted in development and implementation of the Department’ training modules. In addition, he assisted the Department’s legal division in the negotiation and implementation of federal consent agreements.

A native of Illinois, Schomig is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. He has a master’s and Ph.D. in criminal Justice from Southwest University in Kenner, La. He and his wife Janet will reside in Frankfort with daughters, Morgan and Addison. He also has four grown children, Jennifer Fair, Jessica, Justin and Ryan Schomig.
