(FRANKFORT, KY) -The Kentucky State Police will be conducting its sixth annual “Safe Trick-or-Treat” program on Monday, Oct. 31 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kentucky State Police headquarters, 919 Versailles Road in Frankfort. It is designed to provide a secure environment and friendly atmosphere where families can enjoy the holiday in a controlled situation.

To allow as many children to participate as possible, the event will be arranged in a drive-through format. Vehicles will enter the site from the eastbound lanes of U.S. 60 and proceed along the one-quarter-mile running track that circles the building. Children will remain inside the vehicles while costumed volunteers hand out treats at 10 to 15 stations along the route. The cars will continue around the track and re-enter U.S. 60 eastbound.

Organizations or individuals wishing to donate to the event can drop off candy at KSP headquarters. All candy donated and used in the program is screened by hand. Only individually wrapped items, still sealed in the factory bag, are accepted. Additionally, the candy is visually checked and screened with a metal detector to ensure that no foreign matter or contaminant is present.

“This program is designed to address two issues,” says Trooper Brian Stafford, of KSP Post 12 in Frankfort, who coordinates the event. “First, children from rural areas often have little opportunity to go trick-or-treating. Second, many parents who live in suburban areas are wary of the possible hazards of going door-to-door, even in their own neighborhoods.”

“It’s a quick and easy alternative that appeals to parents and it’s safe and fun for the kids,” he adds. “What more could you ask for in a supervised Halloween activity?”
