Justice Cabinet awards federal grant money to combat domestic violence
$2 Million Awarded to Domestic Violence/ Sexual Assault Groups
Frankfort, KY - On behalf of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, Lieutenant Governor Steve Pence awarded nearly $2 million in Federal grant money to 33 different groups today. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) funds the grant award money.
“Violence against women is an intolerable act in which we will not except any excuse for this cowardly behavior,” said Lieutenant Governor Pence. “This grant award money will help fund our efforts to fight domestic violence in our communities across the Commonwealth.”
The grant money will be used by victim’s services groups, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and others helping victims. Some of the projects funded include legal advocacy, legal aid services, emergency shelter, sexual assault nurse examiners, therapy and other aid.
RAPE - SEXUAL ASSAULT - DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FACTS: -Nationally 14% - 18% of all women will be raped or experience an attempted rape -Kentucky estimates show 11.1% of women will be raped -Estimates show only one in six rapes are ever reported to authorities -In 2001 more then 580,000 women were victims of non-fatal violence by spouse/partner -The health related costs of rape, physical assault, stalking and homicide by intimate partners exceed $5.8 billion each year
