Governor Beshear Announces Homeland Security Grant to the City of Blaine

BLAINE, Ky. (June 20, 2008) – Gov. Steve Beshear today announced a $12,500 Kentucky Office of Homeland Security grant to be awarded to the City of Blaine.  The funds will be used to purchase new Jaws of Life for the Blaine Volunteer Fire Department.

“It’s a priority to provide communities with the equipment they need to protect our citizens,” said Gov. Beshear.  “I applaud the leadership of Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins and Sen. Walter Blevins for their commitment to the wellbeing of the people of Blaine.”

"I want to thank the Blaine Volunteer Fire Department for contacting me about this much-needed equipment which will improve their capacity to respond to emergency situations," said Adkins, D-Sandy Hook.  "This equipment can mean life or death in an accident and I want to thank the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security for recognizing the need for this very important lifesaving device.  This will continue to improve the quality of life for the residents in the entire Blaine community."

“It is gratifying that we can provide this type of equipment to a rural area,” said Blevins, D-West Liberty.  “During an emergency, seconds count, and without this grant, it would be a long drive to get the Jaws of Life to Blaine.”

The grant is made in partnership with Blaine officials, first responders, and legislators, and is administered by the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security.

“Ensuring the safety and security of Kentuckians is what our office is all about,” said Adam Edelen, Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security. “Through our partnerships with first responders around the Commonwealth, we are able to identify their critical needs and provide funding to meet those needs.”
