Trace Your Roots at the December Family-History Workshop!
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 4, 2009)— The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) and the Kentucky Genealogical Society (KGS) will host a free family-history workshop that will include two sessions, “More than a Birdseye View of Kentucky” and “Documenting Cemeteries,” from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort. During this month’s Family-History Workshop, presenters will discuss the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) aerial photograph collections and the cemetery research process.
The KDLA aerial photograph collections—dating from the late 1930s to the 1990s and covering nearly the entire state—are useful for researching past and present features of Kentucky’s landscape. Lisa Thompson, a librarian with the public records division-archival services branch at KDLA, will explain how to locate and interpret these images during the morning session.
In the afternoon, Mike Peters, who has many years of experience traveling to cemeteries from North Carolina to Pennsylvania, will describe the cemetery research process in detail. The presentation will cover preparations, onsite activities with an emphasis on tombstone photography, and processing accumulated information and materials.
Presented by KHS and KGS, the free Family-History Workshop series takes place each month at the Center for Kentucky History. Topics range from how to begin documenting your ancestry to specialized resources for experienced genealogists. If requested at the time of registration, an optional light lunch is available at a cost of $6, payable at the door.
To make a reservation, contact the KHS Reference Desk at 502-564-1792, ext. 4460 or RefDesk@ky.gov. Registration for the December workshop is required before noon on Friday, Dec. 11. Learn more about the Family-History Workshop programs and other resources for genealogical research on the KHS Web site, www.history.ky.gov.
