KHS Invites All to Enjoy Theatre in the Garden
Local theatre groups to perform at Thursday evening event

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 23, 2010)—Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets and enjoy “Theatre in the Garden” from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 15 in the Cralle-Day Garden, located behind the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort. The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) Museum Theatre department, Balagula Theatre Company and Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) Theatre Department will perform selected pieces.

Entrance to “Theatre in the Garden” is free with admission. Admission to the KHS history campus is $4 for adults, $2 for youth ages six to 18 and free for children five and under and KHS members.
During “Theatre in the Garden,” a KHS Museum Theatre actor will perform “In the Veins: Conversations from a Coal Town.” Since 1998, the KHS Museum Theatre program has staged more than 50 original productions often inspired by the rich resources in the KHS collections.  Each play is designed to connect audiences with the sights, sounds and stories of the past.  These professional productions provide museum visitors with a personal perspective of historical characters and encourage them to explore the exhibitions to learn more.

The Balagula Theatre Company, of Lexington, is an actor’s theatre with a mission of nurturing local talent. Recent Balagula productions include Arthur Kopit’s “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feeling so Sad” and Jean Paul Sartre’s “No Exit.”

The BCTC Theatre Department, of Lexington, will perform a selection from “A Few Good Men” by Aaron Sorkin. The BCTC Theatre Department provides students with hands-on experience in the theatre. Past BCTC Theatre Department performances include “Blessed Assurance” by Laddy Sartin and “The Boys Next Door” by Tom Griffin.

“Theatre in the Garden” is part of a larger series of Thursday evening programming at KHS.  Other Thursday evening events at the KHS history campus include a small exhibition of the KHS collection of Paul Sawyier paintings on July 22 and a tour of the Old Governor’s Mansion on Aug. 12.
