Find Your People at the March Family-History Workshop

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2010)— The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) and the Kentucky Genealogical Society (KGS) will host a free family-history workshop—"Publishing Print and Electronic Family Histories"—from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 13 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort.

Making the move from data collecting to data publishing requires a deliberate mental shift—one that many genealogists never accomplish. In the morning session, Roger Futrell will offer insights into how he handled the transition from research to interpretation in order to publish his own family history book. The presentation will provide suggestions on compiling your research findings, selecting an appropriate format, choosing a publisher and distributing the final product.

In the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to hear from book publishers and learn about alternatives to traditional publishing for sharing their family stories.

Following the close of each Family-History Workshop at 1:45 p.m., the Kentucky Technology in Genealogy Users Group offers a free program to help support family-history researchers' use and understanding of technology as it applies to genealogy. This month's presentation is "Finding Family Histories Online--What Has Been Printed, Where to Find Them and Whether the Books Are In or Out of Copyright."

Presented by KHS and KGS, the free Family-History Workshop series takes place each month at the Center for Kentucky History. Topics range from how to begin documenting your ancestry to specialized resources for experienced genealogists. If requested at the time of registration, an optional light lunch is available at a cost of $6, payable at the door.

To make a reservation, contact the KHS Reference Desk at 502-564-1792, ext. 4460 or RefDesk@ky.gov. Registration for the March workshop is required before noon on Friday, March 12. Learn more about the Family-History Workshop programs and other resources for genealogical research on the KHS Web site, www.history.ky.gov.
