KHS to Host Heritage Society Event June 11
Frankfort, KY (June 2, 2011) — The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) and the Kentucky Genealogical Society (KGS) will host a free family history workshop and heritage society fair beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 11 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort.
At least 10 different heritage societies will be on-site to provide family historians with membership information and to explain the application process. Representatives from the Daughters of the War of 1812, the Kentucky Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of Union Veterans, First Families of Kentucky, the Sons of the American Revolution and the Hugenot Society, among others, will be in attendance.
“The purpose of this heritage society fair is to expose family historians to the variety of societies that are available,” said Louise Jones, director of special collections and library services at KHS. “These groups allow people to share research pursuits, and many of them have public service aspects, such as scholarship programs, that are attractive to family historians.”
In addition to the heritage society fair, Roger Futrell will conduct a morning workshop from 10:30 to 11:45 where he will share his own experiences with the application process and discuss the criteria for applying to First Families of Tennessee. Following lunch, attendees will have the opportunity to speak to society representatives one-on-one. The Kentucky Technology in Genealogy Users Group will also be available to assist with locating websites for these organizations and showing those in attendance how to apply or post queries online.
Presented by KHS and KGS, the free family history workshop series takes place each month at the Center for Kentucky History. Topics range from how to begin documenting your ancestry to specialized resources for experienced genealogists. If requested at the time of registration, an optional light lunch is available at a cost of $6, payable at the door.
To make a reservation, contact the KHS Reference Desk at 502-564-1792 or RefDesk@ky.gov. The registration deadline for the June workshop is noon on Friday, June 10.
