Governor Ernie Fletcher Appoints Members to the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees
New appointee is former UK professor, surgeon
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher has appointed one new member to the University of Kentucky (UK) Board of Trustees and reappointed two others.
Dr. Charles R. Sachatello, of Lexington, was a new appointee. Sachatello is a retired surgeon and founder and principal of SutureCut LLC in Lexington. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University in three years with a bachelor’s degree in biology and holds a doctor of medicine degree from the Yale University School of Medicine.
Sachatello previously served as professor of surgery at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. At UK, Sachatello established the Groves Memorial Research and Education Fund, which sponsors an annual medical student lecture series, and the Charles R. Sachatello Medical Library Endowment. He is the founder and former president of the Bluegrass Surgical Group PSC, which later merged with other groups to form the United Surgical Group PSC, one of the largest private practice surgical groups in America. He is married to Suzanne R. Sachatello.
Billy Joe Miles, of Owensboro, was reappointed to the board. Miles is president of Miles Farm Supply Inc. and owner of Miles LP Gas Inc. He is past chair of the National Fertilizer Retailers Council and a member of the Kentucky Agricultural Finance Corp and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center Board of Directors. He is past president of the Kentucky Fertilizer and Agricultural Chemical Association and the Kentucky Soil Conservation Districts.
Miles also has served as a member of the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission and the Kentucky Soybean Association. He is chair of the board of directors for the Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital, and is a former member of the board of directors for the U.S. Canola Association and Vanderbilt University Hospital. Miles holds a bachelor’s degree in agronomy from Western Kentucky University. He has served on the UK board since 1995 and was chair from 1998 to 2002.
Pamela R. May, of Pikeville, also was reappointed. May is an attorney and current secretary of the UK Board of Trustees. She is past president of the Pike County Bar Association and a member of the Kentucky Academy of Hospital Attorneys, the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute and the American and Kentucky bar associations.
May is president of the Big Sandy Area Child Advocacy Center and a former member of the board of directors of the Pike County Health Department, Pikeville Preservation Council, Pikeville Main Street and the Pikeville Library. She holds a bachelor’s degree in speech, political science and history from Morehead State University and a juris doctor degree from the UK College of Law. She is married to Walter E. May.
The UK Board of Trustees is made up of 20 members: 16 members appointed by the Governor, two faculty representatives, one nonteaching personnel representative and one student body representative. The terms of the appointed members are six years.
