Award will pay for new buses, facility upgrades for GO bg

Kentucky at WorkFRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Steve Beshear today visited Bowling Green to present local officials with federal stimulus funding aimed at improving public transportation. Community Action of Southern Kentucky, which operates transit services for the city of Bowling Green, will receive $1.14 million for new buses, equipment and facilities.

“This is a worthy investment that will improve public transportation for the people of Bowling Green,” said Gov. Beshear. “It is important, now more than ever, to have a transit system that meets the needs of this vibrant community.”

The award will fund engineering and design work on a bus maintenance garage and will pay for five new 24-passenger buses and miscellaneous maintenance equipment.

Kentucky is set to receive $50.3 million for transit investments through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, including $27 million for large urban transit systems, $4.3 million for small urban systems, such as Bowling Green’s, and $19 million for rural transit programs.

“Every penny of the federal stimulus entrusted to Kentucky will be put toward projects that deliver a return on investment,” said Gov. Beshear. “Kentucky will be an example of how the stimulus can put Americans to work, help stimulate economic expansion and provide critical infrastructure and capital upgrades.”
