FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 13, 2009) – Gov. Steve Beshear, in conjunction with the Recreational Trails Advisory Board, today announced $1.3 million for 31 Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grants to assist communities statewide in developing and maintaining recreational trails.

“We’ve been working to develop our trail systems to give our citizens and our visitors greater access to more outdoor activities across Kentucky,” said Gov. Beshear.  “This funding will help us to create new trails and maintain the existing ones.”

The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort to celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week.  Gov. Beshear was joined by Tourism, Arts and Heritage Secretary Marcheta Sparrow and Department for Local Government Commissioner Tony Wilder along with the grant recipients.

“Tourism is an important industry in Kentucky and this is great news for our adventure tourism efforts.  Many of these grants will help us to continue our efforts to make adventure tourism an economic development tool across the state,” Gov. Beshear said.

Gov. Beshear also announced that the latest survey figures from the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet for 2008 showed that tourism had an economic impact of $11 billion in Kentucky. That’s up from the $10.7 billion for the year 2007.

The RTP is an assistance program funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).  Kentucky’s RTP is administered by the Department for Local Government and requires that applicants match the amount of funds requested to receive a 50 percent reimbursement on approved projects.  Those eligible to apply are city and county governments, state and federal agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

RTP grants may be used to provide assistance for acquisition of easements, development and/or maintenance of recreational trails and trailhead facilities for both motorized and non-motorized use.  Examples of trail uses include hiking, bicycling, in-line skating, equestrian use, off-road motorcycling and all-terrain vehicle riding.
