Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Governor’s Office for Local Development (GOLD) announced today a $257,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the city of New Castle.  The money will be used for a wastewater improvement project.

This project will install approximately 2,600 linear feet of 8-inch line, 1,000 linear feet of 8-inch PVC gravity sewer and 12 manholes.  This will improve the service for 461 customers.

“Infrastructure is vital to the health and development of our communities,” GOLD Commissioner Ellen Williams said.  “Governor Fletcher is committed to improving the quality of life for Kentucky’s citizens.  The city of New Castle will find better service and a healthier living environment.”

New Castle is experiencing problems in regards to inflow and infiltration of ground water into wastewater collection lines.  There have also been recent line collapses of clay line throughout the system.

GOLD Deputy Commissioner Cordell Lawrence presented the check to New Castle Mayor James Brammell on Tuesday, June 21 at the New Castle City Hall.

Kentucky's U. S. Congressional leaders continued support of the CDBG program has made the funding available nationally as well as within the commonwealth.  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development makes these funds available through GOLD, which administers the CDBG Small Cities program in Kentucky.
