Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Governor’s Office for Local Development (GOLD) announced today a $50,000 Recreational Trails grant for Carter County.  The funds will go towards Phase I in the production of 1.7 miles of trail.

The trail will be completed in three phases.  It will run along the abandoned CSX Railroad between Olive Hill and Lawton.  The total project will be 3.7 miles of trail development including the construction of one bridge.

"This project will take a forgotten part of Kentucky's history and forge a new path to the future," Governor Fletcher said.   "Converting our "rails" to "trails" will open up the beauty of Carter County offering outdoor enthusiasts a place to bike, hike and ride."

GOLD Deputy Commissioner Cordell Lawrence presented a check to the Carter County Judge/Executive Charles Wallace at the Carter County Courthouse.

The Recreational Trails Program is funded through the Federal Highway Administration and may be used to acquire land for recreational trails and to develop and renovate trails for both motorized and non-motorized use. Recreational Trails funding is administered by the Governor's Office for Local Development.
