Several families in Breathitt County will soon have safe drinking water, thanks to a grant from Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Governor’s Office for Local Development.

Breathitt County will receive a $1 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to construct nearly 18 miles of water line, a 150,000-gallon water storage tank and a pump station, which will connect 273 homes and three schools in the western part of Breathitt County to clean drinking water.  The water line construction will take place in the western part of the county.

“Every Kentuckian deserves to have drinking water that is safe,” Governor Fletcher said.  “Currently, only 33 percent of Breathitt County residents have public drinking water.  This grant will help connect more families to a reliable source of water.”

Community Development Block Grants are federal monies procured through the efforts of Kentucky’s U.S. Congressional leaders.  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development makes these funds available through GOLD, which administers the CDBG Small Cities program in Kentucky.
