Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Governor’s Office for Local Development (GOLD) announced today a $1 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for Lewis County and the City of Vanceburg. The grant funds will be used to assist in building a new 6,500 square foot health department. The current facility serves 2,257 patients in the area.
The current Lewis County Health Department has limited storage space for medicines and files. The building does not meet Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA) regulations and is not well-equipped for modern laboratory procedures. Also, the facility has a leaking roof and does not have an adequate electrical system to operate the computer systems and the new laboratory equipment.
The new facility will be at a more accessible site with better parking. It will be located less than a mile from the current health department and will be owned and maintained by the health department. It is anticipated that patient services will increase with the expansion of the exam rooms. The current facility only has one exam room and the new facility will have four
Governor Fletcher stated, “These funds will provide an improved facility for the citizens of Lewis County. With a modernized building and fixtures, the community will receive better health care service.”
The Lewis County Health Department currently offers services such as the Women and Infant Children (WIC) program, family planning, immunizations, and blood screens. In addition, the facility houses the State Plumbing Inspector and the Environmental Specialist for Septic Permits.
Governor Fletcher presented the check to Lewis County Judge/Executive Steve Applegate and Mayor William Cooper of Vanceburg on Friday, February 11 at the Lewis County High School.
Community Development Block Grants are federally funded grants that are crucial to the progress and success of a community. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development makes these funds available through GOLD, which administers the CDBG Small Cities program in Kentucky.
