Public Review Sought For Forestland Assessment
Division of Forestry encourages public comment about state forestlands

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 12, 2010) – State and federal resource agencies have worked diligently throughout the past year to compile data and information for a comprehensive report entitled Kentucky’s Statewide Assessment of Forest Resources.    The final assessment report will be published in June 2010; however, a draft is currently under review by the assessment team led by the Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF).  The team is also in the process of drafting strategies to address various forest-related issues that have already been identified through discussions and a public survey.  While the report is being finalized, another opportunity for the interested public to provide comments and suggestions is being offered.

“The finalized report will identify threats to our state’s forests and trees and will serve as a basis for planning and funding future forestry related projects in priority areas—rural and urban,” said Leah MacSwords, KDF director and state forester.  “We want to encourage anyone who shares a concern for Kentucky’s trees and forests to review the report and provide their comments and concerns.”

The draft assessment report can be viewed online at and written comments will be accepted through March 5, 2010.  For more information about Kentucky’s Statewide Assessment of Forest Resources, please visit KDF’s Web site at or call 800-866-0555.
