Kentucky Firefighters to Help with California Wildfires
Interagency Crews head west to fight fires

FRANKFORT, KY – (Aug. 6, 2009) – An interagency crew of 40 firefighters are on their way to Redding, Calif., where they will be assigned to a fire to assist with suppression efforts.  Numerous large fires are currently burning in northern California and in other areas of the Northwest.  The crews assembled at the Southern Interagency Fire Cache in London, Ky., and were ordered through the dispatch office of the Kentucky Interagency Coordination Center of the Daniel Boone National Forest on Wednesday.  The crews consist of firefighters from the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Kentucky Division of Forestry, the National Park Service and the Tennessee Division of Forestry.
Although wildfires have not posed a problem for Kentucky this summer, forestry officials want to remind private landowners, public land managers and homeowners to help prevent wildland fires.  Kentucky’s fall fire hazard season begins Oct. 1 and officials are concerned about the potential for increased wildfire activity due to the accumulation of wood debris from last winter’s storms.  To find out how you can prevent a wildfire from striking your home, visit the Kentucky Division of Forestry Web site at  For more information about national wildfires, visit
