First Lady Jane Beshear Announces Third Annual Shop and Share Drive
FRANKFORT, Ky. – First Lady Jane Beshear today announced that a “Shop and Share” drive, in collaboration with the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association (KDVA), will take place for the third year.
In 2009, domestic violence programs sheltered more than 4,100 people. “Shop and Share” encourages Kentuckians to contribute much-needed resources to domestic violence shelters, which support victims and their children. Kroger stores across the state will be collecting monetary donations at each checkout line. The drive began Oct. 10 and will last until Nov. 6. The third annual “Shop and Share Day,” a one-day drive to provide domestic violence shelters with needed goods, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011.
“One in four women and one out of nine men in the United States are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives, and that includes a number of families and individuals across Kentucky,” said Mrs. Beshear. “The least we can do is to make a small contribution through Shop and Share toward easing their suffering.”
Mrs. Beshear initiated “Shop and Share Day” after visiting shelters and meeting their residents across the state.
Last year, a “Shop and Share Day” was held on Saturday, Oct. 24. The drive had overwhelming success with estimated contributions of more than $200,000, including both goods and monetary donations.
The First Lady’s office is joined by the KDVA, Kroger, Drug Court, the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the Commission on Women in organizing “Shop and Share.”
The KDVA was founded in 1981 and is a coalition of Kentucky’s 15 domestic violence programs providing services to victims of domestic violence and their children. Its purpose is to provide mutual support, information, resource sharing and technical assistance; to coordinate statewide services; and to advocate collectively on behalf of victims of domestic violence.
