Volunteers still needed for Goods Drive to Benefit Domestic Violence Shelters

Frankfort, Ky. – First Lady Jane Beshear today announced Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, as this year’s date for “Shop and Share Day,” a one-day drive to provide domestic violence shelters with needed goods.

The goods drive is held at Kroger stores across Kentucky. Each store provides a list of items needed at the shelters, such as canned foods, toilet paper and soap, and has a bin to collect the donated goods. Mrs. Beshear initiated “Shop and Share Day” after visiting shelters and meeting their residents across the state.

“All of us are aware of the terrible crime of domestic violence. And whether we know it or not, many of us have friends or family members who have been victims themselves,” said Mrs. Beshear. “I am encouraging citizens to donate some of their time to volunteer for ‘Shop and Share’ Day. Volunteers are still needed at several Kroger locations.”

Volunteers are needed to help collect donated items at Kroger stores between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers will be given a list of items that are needed for shelters and bins for the items being collected. To sign up for a time, visit the volunteer sign-up page: The deadline to volunteer is Friday, Oct. 16, 2009.

Last year’s “Shop and Share Day” was held on Saturday, October 11. The drive had overwhelming success with estimated donations at over $200,000, including both goods and monetary donations.

The First Lady’s office is joined by the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association (KDVA), Kroger, Drug Court, the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the Commission on Women in organizing “Shop and Share Day.”

KDVA was founded in 1981 and is a coalition of Kentucky’s 15 domestic violence programs providing services to victims of domestic violence and their children.  Its purpose is to provide mutual support, information, resource sharing and technical assistance, coordinate statewide services and to advocate collectively on behalf of victims of domestic violence.
