Program created by First Lady Jane Beshear to raise breast cancer awareness and education

FRANKFORT, Ky. – As part of the “Horses and Hope” program created by First Lady Jane Beshear and the Kentucky Cancer Program to support breast cancer awareness, tomorrow Turfway Park will host its second Breast Cancer Race Day.

Every year between 2,800 and 3,200 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the second leading cause of death for women in Kentucky. Such a staggering statistic led Mrs. Beshear to develop “Horses and Hope”: an initiative to educate, improve awareness and offer screenings for the often overlooked members of Kentucky’s horse industry.

“The event last year at Turfway Park was such a huge success and I am thrilled that the park is hosting another event this year,” said Mrs. Beshear. “It is always admirable to see the citizens of this great Commonwealth come together for a common cause – to raise awareness of such a terrible disease.”

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time with two races designated as “Horses and Hope” races running at approximately 7:50 p.m. and 8:17 p.m. Admission is free.

In addition to the event at Turfway Park, “Horses and Hope” will sponsor Breast Cancer Race Days to raise awareness at other Kentucky racetracks on the following days:

  • Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 – Keeneland
  • Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 – Churchill Downs

In July, First Lady Jane Beshear celebrated the one year anniversary and phenomenal success of the “Horses and Hope” program. Since the program began in 2008 over 760 track workers have been educated about the importance of testing for breast cancer, six screening dates led to the further testing and diagnosis of breast cancer in two individuals, and over 125,246 Race Day fans have learned more about the importance of being tested as well as about the prevalence of breast cancer in the Commonwealth.
