Recycling program expanded for Frankfort state office buildings
FRANKFORT, Ky (January 12, 2010) – Beginning in February, more state employees working in Frankfort will have access to recycling in their office buildings. Today Jonathan Miller, Finance and Administration Cabinet Secretary, and Frankfort Mayor Gippy Graham announced a partnership between the state and the city that will expand recycling collections in more state buildings at no charge.
“By agreeing to collect the state’s recyclables for free, the city has afforded us an opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of our facilities at no charge to the taxpayers,” said Sec. Miller. “The expansion of recycling is a great complement to the many initiatives implemented by Gov. Beshear to make state government more efficient and environmentally friendly.”
For the past year, recycling containers have been available in the Capitol and Capitol Annex. Today’s announcement expands the program to include at least six other office buildings: State Office building; Cabinet for Health and Family Services building; Central Laboratory; Office of Building and Mechanical Services on Holmes Street; the Bush Building, which houses the Department for Facilities and Support Services; and the Vest-Lindsey House. The Finance and Administration Cabinet is exploring the ability to include other facilities as well.
“I am pleased that the city of Frankfort can collaborate with state government in this effort,” said Mayor Graham. “Recycling is beneficial to all citizens of Frankfort and to the participating state government employees.”
The buildings that will begin recycling programs with this initiative were already on the city’s collection routes. Their inclusion will not cost the city any money because no special routing or extra manpower or equipment will be required.
The city will collect recycling from the state buildings weekly. They will accept aluminum and steel cans, cardboard, any type of paper products, plastic containers, phone books and magazines. They will not be able to accept paper bags, glass and Styrofoam.
