FRANKFORT, Ky.—Just in time for the holidays, the Finance and Administration Cabinet's Division of Historic Properties is offering the second in a series of limited edition Kentucky State Capitol ornaments.
The 2004 ornament depicts the majestic Capitol dome, a Frankfort landmark and a symbol of state government since the dedication of the New Capitol in 1910. The cost of each ornament is $20. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments will go to an endowment fund for the renovation and restoration of the Capitol.
“The purchase of this ornament provides a unique opportunity for the citizens of the commonwealth to support the important preservation of our historic Capitol building, as well as own a beautifully crafted symbol of our government that can be displayed with pride, “ First Lady Glenna Fletcher said.
Each expertly crafted ornament is packaged in its own presentation box along with a brief history of the Capitol dome. The 2004 ornament has been masterfully designed and crafted by the ChemArt company of Lincoln, Rhode Island. ChemArt also designs the White House Christmas ornaments.
In 1999, a master plan was developed for a comprehensive renovation of the nearly 100-year-old seat of Kentucky state government. The plan addressed the historic restoration, mechanical systems, space allocation, lighting, ADA issues and structural integrity of the 235,000 square foot building, which has not undergone a major restoration since the 1950s.
Restoration plans have been put on hold due to budgetary constraints.
The ornaments are available at the Capitol Gift Shop, the 1792 Shop at the Kentucky History Center, the Kentucky Coffee Tree Café, the Frankfort/Franklin County Tourism Office, the Lexington History Museum and the Berry Mansion. The ornaments will also be available between Thanksgiving and Christmas in the gift shops at Kentucky State Resort Parks. You may place an order for delivery, payable by credit card, by contacting the Division of Historic Properties at Ornament@ky.gov or by phone at 502/564-3000, ext. 230.
More information and a photograph of the ornament are available on the Internet at https://finance.ky.gov/ourcabinet/caboff/DFSS/dhp/Ornament.htm.
