COMMONWEALTH CLEANUP WEEK IS MARCH 25-31: Cash prizes, reimbursement for tire cleanups available
FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 9, 2007) – This year’s theme of “Don’t Litter – Pick up the Habit” encourages Kentuckians to do their part in keeping the state free from litter and other debris during the 9th annual Commonwealth Cleanup Week, which is March 25-31.
The 1998 Kentucky General Assembly (House Joint Resolution 121) designated the fourth week in March as an opportunity for Kentuckians to participate in "activities that highlight the natural beauty of their communities." Event activities include an art contest and cleanup activities.
The Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet’s Division of Waste Management coordinates Commonwealth Cleanup Week in partnership with Keep America Beautiful Inc., the state Transportation Cabinet and local governments. The Glad Products Co., a partner of Keep America Beautiful, has donated GLAD ForceFlex® trash bags for Commonwealth Cleanup Week.
Nonprofit organizations that conduct cleanup activities in local communities are eligible to win cash prizes. Organizations must register through their local solid waste coordinator and complete a cleanup project to be eligible for $1,000, $500, and $250 prizes, which will be awarded by random drawing.
Reimbursements will be given to participating counties for costs up to $1,000 for the removal of tires from a dump or a roadside during Commonwealth Cleanup Week and the East Kentucky PRIDE spring cleanup held in April. This money comes from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, established by the 1998 General Assembly, to receive revenue from a $1 fee from customers for each new tire sold.
Forms and additional information including a list of solid waste coordinators are available by going online to the Commonwealth Cleanup Week page on the division’s Web site – http://www.waste.ky.gov/ccw/ or contacting Division of Waste Management, 14 Reilly Road, Building 5, Frankfort KY 40601, 502-564-6716.
