State issues permit for Benson Valley Landfill expansion
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 30, 2007) – The Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet’s Division of Waste Management has issued a permit allowing the Benson Valley Area Landfill, Frankfort, to expand within its property boundaries and buffer zones. The waste area of the expansion is approximately 97 acres.
Issuance had been pending resolution of a notice of violation issued Sept. 12 to Benson Valley.
The proposed expansion brought numerous public comments prompting the division to impose additional permit conditions regarding dust control, litter, mud on Highway 151 caused by traffic from the landfill, and groundwater seep on the western side of the landfill.
Several individuals expressed concern about the number of birds both on the landfill and adjoining property. After inspecting the site, the division issued a letter of warning to Benson Valley Landfill for improper daily cover. The landfill must prevent vector attraction by ensuring all waste is covered at the end of the day.
The response to comments – a document containing a summation of comments that directly relate to the expansion and the agency response to each – can be accessed by going online to waste.ky.gov or contacting the division, 502-564-6716.
