State Fire Marshal's Office investigating fire at Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center horse barns
FRANKFORT, KY – (Sept. 1, 2009) – Officials from the Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office joined with investigators from the Louisville Metro Arson Unit to determine the origin and cause of an overnight fire that destroyed four horse barns at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. Several neighboring barns received minor damage.
The fire was reported around 2 a.m. when an alarm sounded at the fairgrounds. Units from the Louisville Fire Department were able to bring the fire under control around 6 a.m.
Because of the size of the area of the fire as well as the devastation to the barns, State Fire Marshal investigators have not yet determine the cause of the fire, nor the origin. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been asked to bring in an accelerant detection canine to assist in determining where the fire began as well as the possible cause. The canine will be on the scene Wednesday. Meanwhile, investigators have suspended their search of the property in order to not further disturb the scene before the canine arrives Wednesday. A fire unit will remain on the scene overnight as will security personnel.
