FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 28, 2006) – Public voting on potential designs for the popular “Nature’s Finest” license plates can now be done online.
Visitors to www.ky.gov will find a link to an electronic ballot for the nature plates, whose sales generate revenue for the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund.

Three current designs – the cardinal, bobcat, and viceroy butterfly – are joined by eight new designs. Voters may register first, second and third choices.

New designs depict Cumberland Falls, Natural Bridge, a Kentucky bass, a hummingbird, dragonflies, a mallard, orange coneflowers and lady slippers with salamander.

Voting, which was first available at the Kentucky State Fair, will continue until Oct. 16. Three final designs are to be announced in January 2007 and available for purchase in January 2008.

Nature license plates are an important funding mechanism for conservation efforts in Kentucky.  Each year, the Heritage Land Conservation Fund receives approximately $1 million from sales of the “Nature’s Finest” plates, each of which bears an additional $10 special fee.  The funds are used to purchase and manage selected natural areas and wildlife habitat across Kentucky.
