EPPC approves BGAD work plan for chemical munitions storage

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 24, 2005)--The Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, Division of Waste Management (DWM), has approved a work plan for chemical munitions storage, rewarehousing and re-palletizing for the Blue Grass Army Depot (BGAD). A public comment period ended June 21, 2005 with DWM receiving no external comments. The work plan is approved for one year, beginning July 1, 2005.

This work plan summarizes the planned implementation of management practices involving the handling and movement within igloos of chemical munitions containing nerve agents GB (Sarin) and VX and blister agent H (Mustard). Outlined in the work plan is the re-palletizing and rewarehousing of munitions.  Re-palletizing consists of removing munitions from a pallet and putting them on a new pallet.  Re-warehousing consists of relocating, adjusting, and/or restacking pallets within an igloo. All operations will occur inside igloos at the Blue Grass Chemical Activity (BGCA) Chemical Limited Area at BGAD.

The approved Chemical Munitions Storage Management Work Plan can be reviewed at the following locations:  Madison County Public Library, Richmond Branch; Madison County Public Library, Berea Branch; Eastern Kentucky University Public Library; Blue Grass Chemical Stockpile Outreach Office, and the Division of Waste Management in Frankfort.
