Governor Fletcher Awards $49,993 to Stimulate Biodiesel Infrastructure in Central and Eastern Kentucky
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher announced today that $49,993 has been awarded by the Governor’s Office of Energy Policy (GOEP) to the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition (KCFC) to facilitate the development of storage and distribution systems for biodiesel.
The grant was awarded to the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition (KCFC), a non-profit organization. According to GOEP Executive Director Talina Mathews, “This grant supports Governor Fletcher’s commitment to increase the availability and use of biofuels in the Commonwealth.”
KCFC will coordinate with the Center for Rural Development, based in Somerset, to identify strategic locations for biodiesel storage and distribution projects in Central and Eastern Kentucky. There is a clear lack of biofuel retail sites in this part of the state and a portion of the grant will be used to leverage construction of the infrastructure needed to support retail owners. KCFC will issue a request for proposals to businesses interested in adding biodiesel infrastructure in December or early January. Businesses that wish to apply for funding will be able to review the solicitation at www.kentuckycleanfuels.org.
“Production of biodiesel in Kentucky is expected to jump from 2 million gallons annually to 70 million gallons by Fall 2007. It is essential that we get the distribution systems in place to enable end users across Kentucky the ease of use of biodiesel for their fleets,” noted Melissa Howell, executive director of the KCFC.
Funding for this program is from the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program. The ability to leverage federal funding for these energy programs meets goals outlined in Governor Fletcher’s comprehensive energy strategy, Kentucky’s Energy – Opportunities for our Future, issued in February 2005. The strategy contains 54 recommendations to guide the Commonwealth’s energy policy and programs. Governor Fletcher’s comprehensive energy strategy can be found at the KOEP’s Web site: www.energy.ky.gov.
