Frankfort, KY, (August 17, 2006) – Is hot weather making your air conditioner work harder?  Is that putting more stress on your electric bill?  Come to the Kentucky State Fair to see how you can cool off those energy costs.

The cost savings and energy efficiency of using ENERGY STAR-qualified products and building practices will be showcased in a 3,000 sq ft exhibit at this year’s Kentucky State Fair.  The exhibit will feature a model of an ENERGY STAR qualified home under construction, as well as ENERGY STAR lighting and appliances.

ENERGY STAR, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is a voluntary government/industry partnership program that sets superior energy efficiency standards for products and buildings.  Products with the ENERGY STAR label can be found at most Kentucky home improvement and hardware stores, as well as major grocery stores.  With the help of ENERGY STAR, last year Americans saved about $10 billion on their energy bills while reducing harmful emissions equivalent to those of 20 million cars.

This state fair exhibit is the result of a collaboration between the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the Kentucky Office of Energy Policy (KOEP).  The UK Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering built the residential construction model.  Other contributors to the exhibit are participating Kentucky Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, which are providing a display featuring their Touchstone Energy Home Program and staffing, as well as General Electric, which is supplying the appliances on display.

“With volatile energy prices, energy efficiency just makes sense,” said Secretary George Ward of Kentucky’s Commerce Cabinet.  “Through this exhibit, Kentuckians can learn how ENERGY STAR can improve their lives while reducing their heating and cooling costs.”

The exhibit is located at Main Street Kentucky in the fair’s South Wing.  The Kentucky State Fair begins August 17 and runs through August 27.

This ENERGY STAR exhibit will live beyond the state fair.  It will be featured at home and garden shows, conferences, and other events.  For more information about ENERGY STAR, contact Lola Lyle, KOEP, at 1-800-282-0868 or visit  This exhibit is primarily funded by KOEP and is in support of the goals outlined in the Commonwealth’s comprehensive energy strategy, Kentucky’s Energy:  Opportunities for Our Future.  The strategy encourages the development of public-private partnerships dedicated to promoting energy efficiency through education and outreach.
