County jobless rates mixed from April 2004 to April 2005

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 2, 2005) — Unemployment rates rose in 61 Kentucky counties between April 2004 and April 2005, fell in 54 counties and stayed the same in five counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet.
In April 2005, two counties had jobless rates at or above 10 percent, and three counties recorded double-digit rates in April 2004.
Woodford and Oldham counties’ 3.9 percent jobless rates were the lowest in the commonwealth. Other low rates were recorded in Shelby and Boone counties, 4 percent each; Anderson, Fayette and Spencer counties, 4.2 percent each; and Barren, Jessamine and Metcalfe counties, 4.3 percent each.
Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate — 12.4 percent. It was followed by Elliott County, 10 percent, Wolfe County, 9.9 percent; Graves County, 9.3 percent; Nicholas County, 8.5 percent; Lewis County, 8.2 percent; and Clay, McCreary, Menifee and Morgan counties, 8.1 percent each.
Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics in this news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and counties figures.
