Preindustrial Appalachia focus of 2009 Annual Public Archives Symposium

Frankfort, Ky.  – Preindustrial Appalachia is the topic of the 21st annual Public Archives Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 1:30 p.m. at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg.

The Friends of Kentucky Public Archives, Inc., in cooperation with the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA), will present Dr. Robert S. Weise, an associate professor of history at Eastern Kentucky University, at the symposium. Dr. Weise will speak about his book, “Grasping at Independence:  Debt, Male Authority, and Mineral Rights in Appalachian Kentucky, 1850-1915.”  This book was published by the University of Tennessee Press.

The symposium’s purpose is to increase the public's awareness of the wide range of historical records available for research in Kentucky repositories. 

The Friends of Kentucky Public Archives is a not for profit membership organization of private citizens concerned with helping the Public Records Division of KDLA fulfill its role as a vital information link between people and government. The symposium will be preceded by lunch at the Trustees' Office Dining Room at 11:30 a.m. The symposium is free and open to public. Lunch is $28, and pre-registration is required for the meal.
