FRANKFORT, KY. (April 4, 2011) - In support of the ongoing severe weather threat, the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM) has activated the Commonwealth Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) at Level III in response to severe weather that is impacting the Commonwealth. Additional personnel from KYEM, Kentucky National Guard, state and volunteer agencies are now on rotating shifts to monitor the developing situation and fulfill any requests for assistance.
Reports are coming into the KYEM Commonwealth Emergency Information Center (CEIC) of possible tornadoes touching down in Ballard County near La Center, Kentucky, with injuries being reported. Christian County is reporting damage to an industrial park with several buildings damaged or destroyed in Hopkinsville. In Muhlenberg County a report has been received of a mobile home park being hit from a possible tornado or high winds, along with injuries. The extent of these injuries is not known at this time.
KYEM and other emergency responding agencies are on the scene. Ballard County 911 Emergency Communication Services were interrupted for a short period but have been restored.
The National Weather Service Paducah Office issued a tornado watch, and later warning, for the Western Kentucky region earlier today. These alerts are expected to continue as the weather system moves east/northeast across the Commonwealth along with the threat of high wind, large hail, heavy rain and possible tornadoes.
There have been no requests for assistance from county governments.
Should you encounter a down power line, do not approach it, call your utility provider.
Weather safety tips and weather alerts by county can be found on the KYEM website at www.kyem.ky.gov.
