Howard Promoted to Warden at Bell County Forestry Camp
Kentucky Department of Corrections Commissioner LaDonna Thompson today announced the promotion of Gregory S. Howard as warden of the Bell County Forestry Camp (BCFC).
Howard began his career as a Correctional Officer in July 1991 at the Kentucky State Reformatory (KSR). He quickly moved up the ranks at KSR and within three years was promoted to Sergeant. Two years later he was promoted to Lieutenant, and then Classification and Treatment Officer. In 2001, Howard was again promoted, this time to the rank of Captain. He also served as a Unit Administrator and Training Instructor during his time at KSR. In 2006, he was promoted to a program administrator’s position at Central Office.
“Greg has been a valuable member of the Corrections team for many years,” said Thompson. “He has always been willing to work in positions to benefit the Department. I am sure his serving as warden will again benefit the Department as well as Bell County Forestry Camp due to the vast experience base he brings with him to the institution. I am very pleased he agreed to accept the position and I know he will do an excellent job.”
From June thru early September 2007, Howard was assigned as Interim Warden for Little Sandy Correctional Complex. He was promoted to Deputy Warden of Support Services for the Kentucky State Penitentiary on August 1, 2007 and then served as Deputy Warden of Security from October 2008 until his promotion to Warden.
Howard has received numerous awards during his career for outstanding performance. He served as the Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) commander at KSR for seven years and currently holds the position of statewide CERT commander. Howard also held the position of the statewide administrator for the Hostage Negotiation Team for four years. He is the state coordinator for the National Major Gang Task Force, and a member of the Midwest Gang Investigators Association. His other memberships include: the Regional Organized Crime Information Center (ROCIC); American Correctional Association (ACA); Kentucky Council on Crime and Delinquency (KCCD) and Southern States Correctional Association (SSCA).
Howard is a 1989 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in Police Administration. He is a member of the White’s Run Baptist Church in Easterday, and enjoys spending time on the weekends with his family in Carrollton.
