BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Oct. 19, 2004) – Area teens with disabilities will explore job opportunities on Wednesday, Oct. 20, during Disability Mentoring Day at two local Kroger stores and the Caveland Educational Support Center (CESC).

National Disability Mentoring Day is a partnership between the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and the U.S. Department of Labor. Locally, the event is sponsored by the Kentucky Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CCSHCN), Greenwood High School, Warren East High School and Warren Central High School. Three of the teens participating in the event are patients of the CCSHCN.

The teens will be paired with employees at the Kroger stores at 350 US 31W Bypass and 2945 Scottsville Road, and also will meet with consultants at the CESC, 1790 Normal Drive.

The goal of Disability Mentoring Day is to allow young people with disabilities the opportunity to explore different types of jobs and to examine their own educational and career goals. Employers will have one-on-one contact with youth with disabilities, giving the employer an opportunity to learn how valuable people with disabilities can be as potential employees.

The Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs serves children with physical disabilities from birth to age 21 with care coordination, clinical and therapeutic services. The Commission coordinates the Newborn Hearing Screening program as well as the Kentucky Hemophilia and Sickle Cell programs. For more information about the Commission, please call (270) 746-7816 or (800) 232-1160, or visit the Web site at http://chs.ky.gov/commissionkids.
