Deadline Extended for Food Benefits; Clients to Apply for Replacement Benefits; Customers have 10 extra days to make claim for groceries destroyed by floods
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 2, 2010) – Kentuckians living in areas of the state hardest hit by July flooding who lost perishable groceries purchased with food benefits have extra time to apply for replacement benefits.
Participants in counties affected by the July 17 and July 20 flooding whose food was spoiled because of flooding or power outages have extra time to apply for replacement benefits at their local Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) family support offices.
DCBS Commissioner Patricia R. Wilson said that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – formerly known as food stamps -- within the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service, which oversees and funds SNAP, agreed to Kentucky’s request to extend the application period.
“With so many families affected by these floods, we wanted to be sure every SNAP client who lost groceries and needs replacement benefits has the chance to apply,” she said.
DCBS, part of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, administers the SNAP program in county offices across the state.
The original replacement benefit deadlines – at the end of July – were extended by 10 days.
SNAP participants in Pike and Shelby counties have until Friday, Aug. 6, to apply for replacement benefits.
Participants in Carter, Elliott, Lewis, Mason and Rowan counties have until Monday, Aug. 9, to apply for replacement benefits.
