Frankfort, KY (July 6, 2004) State Auditor Crit Luallen was released July 5 from St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington following surgery on June 30 to remove a section of her colon containing a tumor.

Preliminary test results following a colonoscopy had indicated the growth was benign.  Final pathology tests after the surgery showed the growth to be malignant.  However, the cancer was restricted to the portion of the colon removed.
"The cancer was early stage with no evidence of having spread", according to her surgeon Dr. John Stewart, "Ms. Luallen's surgery has fully addressed the problem and we expect a complete recovery without the need for additional treatment.  Upon her recovery from surgery she is expected to return to her normal work schedule and lifestyle and has an excellent long term prognosis."

Luallen again urges all Kentuckians to use the benefits of preemptive medicine. Ms. Luallen said, "The surgery was successful because a routine screening colonoscopy discovered the problem early.  I encourage everyone, especially those with a family history, to have regular cancer screenings.  It is important, not just for ourselves, but for our families, that each of us discuss with our own physicians the benefits of preventive medicine."
