Governor Appoints Members to Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission

FRANKFORT, KY (February 22, 2008) – Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed the following members to the Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission:

-  Melvin L. Turner is coordinator of educational services for the University of Louisville. He replaces Nang-Ping White, whose term has expired. The appointment shall serve for a term expiring Dec. 12, 2010.

-  Randall Vaughn is director of architecture for James N. Gray Company. He replaces Helen Le Ascani, whose term has expired. The appointment shall serve for a term expiring Dec. 12, 2010.

-  Terri Reynolds is area coordinator for Eastern Kentucky University Somerset Center. She replaces Gayle S. Graham, whose term has expired. The appointment shall serve for a term expiring Dec. 12, 2010.

-  V. Ann Newman is vice president of compliance and internal controls for Ashland Credit Union. She replaces Beulah L. Bridgewaters, whose term has expired. The appointment shall serve for a term expiring Dec. 12, 2011.

-  Sherwood Thompson is a professor at Eastern Kentucky University. He replaces Henry Humphrey, whose term ahs expired. The appointment shall serve for a term expiring Dec. 12, 2011.

-  Lawrence L. Winburn is a union organizer for Laborers’ International Union Local 576. He replaces Michael E. Ford Sr., whose term has expired. The appointment shall serve for a term expiring Dec. 12, 2011.

Founded in August 1992, the mission of the Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission is to promote the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by the late civil rights leader.

The 13-member commission, appointed by the governor, focuses on Dr. King's dream for all Americans to experience full equality, economic justice, and interracial harmony. The Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission sponsors the Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Celebration.
