Donations will generate funding for domestic violence prevention programs

Frankfort, KY:  Lieutenant Governor Steve Pence announced today more than 1500 mobile phones and accessories were donated by state employees in less than two months.  The phones were collected throughout the holiday season in HopeLine® bins, which were placed in state office buildings, state parks, KSP posts, and the capitol campus.

“I want to thank state employees for participating in this cell phone drive.  Their donations have been very generous,” said Lieutenant Governor Pence.  “The money generated by these donations will touch some very important organizations right here in Kentucky.”

HopeLine® was created 10 years ago by Verizon Wireless as a phone recycling program to benefit victims of domestic violence. HopeLine® accepts no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories from any vendor.  Most of the donated phones and equipment are refurbished and sold with proceeds going to support domestic violence awareness and prevention programs.  Since its inception, the program has collected more than 2.5 million phones.

In late November 2005, Lieutenant Governor Pence kicked off the statewide cell phone drive.  More than 100 HopeLine® bins were located in state buildings across Kentucky.  The bins were then collected in January and the phones were counted and shipped back to the HopeLine® program.

“From the day the cell phone drive began, we have had a very enthusiastic response from state employees.  We even had folks mail their donated phones to my office from locations in the state where a bin wasn’t readily available.  It’s encouraging to know that so many people care enough to take the time to offer these donations,” concluded Lieutenant Governor Pence.
