Adventure travel is among fastest-growing tourism niches in United States

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher today announced the next step in his plan to draw more visitors to Kentucky to enjoy the Commonwealth’s rich offering of outdoor adventure activities.

“Kentucky Unbridled Adventure” is a new campaign that will be orchestrated by the Kentucky Department of Tourism. The campaign comes with a new “Unbridled Adventure” logo and plans to increase marketing and promotion of Kentucky’s many outdoor adventure activities.

“Adventure travel is one of the fastest-growing tourism niches in the country,” said Governor Fletcher. “With our wealth of outdoor activities, Kentucky is a paradise for thrill seekers. I want to do everything possible to tell our story to adventure travelers all over the country and the world.”

Kentucky Unbridled Adventure LogoThe “Kentucky Unbridled Adventure” name and logo were selected after interviews and feedback from nearly 100 local municipal, business and tourism representatives throughout Kentucky. The representatives were shown various name and logo options to determine which best suited Kentucky’s adventure travel advantages.

The move to grow the adventure tourism market started more than a year ago when, at Governor Fletcher’s directive, the Kentucky Department of Tourism and the Appalachian Regional Commission had a study conducted to determine the economic potential of adventure tourism in eastern Kentucky. That study, released in August, concluded that increased spending on adventure tourism in eastern Kentucky could result in an increase of 130,000 visitors a year, create more than 1,500 additional jobs and have an economic impact of up to $100 million. At that time, Governor Fletcher also committed $623,000 in grants to local communities for adventure tourism promotion in eastern Kentucky.

“That study showed what could happen in just one section of Kentucky,” said Governor Fletcher. “Imagine what we can now achieve for adventure travel statewide.”

Adventure tourism encompasses such activities as rock climbing, hiking, whitewater rafting, spelunking, biking, ATV riding and nature viewing.

“Everyone has a different definition of adventure,” said Governor Fletcher. “For some, it’s climbing a rock wall. For others, it’s watching the elk herds in eastern Kentucky. We want to showcase the full range of possible adventure activities in Kentucky and tell others about everything we have to offer.”
