Governor Ernie Fletcher Directs Flags to Remain at Half-Staff in Honor of Kentucky Sailor
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher has directed that flags at all state office buildings remain at half-staff in honor of Navy Chief Petty Officer Gregory J. Billiter.
According to the Department of Defense, Billiter, 36, of Villa Hills, died April 6 from enemy action while conducting combat operations near Kirkuk, Iraq. He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit Eleven, Whidbey Island, Wash.
Flags are currently at half-staff in honor of Army Spc. William G. Bowling, of Beattyville, and Cpl. Joseph H. Cantrell IV, of Ashland. Flags will remain at half-staff in honor of Bowling until sunset on Wednesday, April 11, the day of his funeral. Flags will remain at half-staff in honor of Cantrell and Billiter until sunset on the day of their respective funerals. Arrangements have not yet been determined.
