Governor Ernie Fletcher Directs Flags to Remain at Half-Staff in Honor of Kentucky Marine

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher has directed that flags at all state office buildings remain at half-staff in honor of Lance Cpl. Thomas P. Echols.

According to the Department of Defense, Echols, 20, of Shepherdsville, died December 4 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq.  He was assigned to 1st

Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Flags are currently at half-staff in honor of Pfc. Theodore M. West, of Richmond, who died November 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.  West’s funeral will be Saturday, December 9.

Flags will remain at half-staff throughout the state until sunset on the day of Echols’ funeral.  Arrangements have not yet been determined.
