Governor Fletcher Announces Plans for New State Veterans Cemetery
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher today announced plans for a new Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Williamstown.
Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North will be located on 99 acres off I-75 at mile marker 154.
“Because of the service of the veterans who have gone before us, we have our freedoms, and we have our tomorrows,” said Governor Fletcher. “It is most fitting that we dedicate this land in our honor of our veterans.”
Construction will include a 3,600-square-foot administration building, a 4,400-square-foot maintenance building with service area, committal facility and a columbarium. It also will have appropriate parking, road network, walking path and landscaping commensurate with the dignity and honor of a state veterans cemetery.
Construction at Williamstown is expected to begin in January 2007, and the cemetery could open in 2008.
Construction and initial equipment for Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North will cost approximately $7.5 million. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will reimburse the state for construction, and the state will pay the operating costs.
