Governor Ernie Fletcher Directs Flags to Remain at Half-Staff in Memory of Kentucky Soldier

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher has directed that flags at all state office buildings remain at half-staff in honor of Spc. Windell J. Simmons.

According to the Department of Defense, Simmons, 20, of Hopkinsville, died of injuries suffered in Taji, Iraq, on September 23, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.  Simmons was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Hood, Texas.

Flags are currently at half-staff in memory of Sgt. 1st Class Charles Jason Jones, a member of the Kentucky National Guard who died September 20 in Baghdad, Iraq.  Jones’ funeral will be held on Saturday, September 30.

Flags will remain at half-staff throughout the state until sunset on Monday, October 2, the day of Simmons’ funeral.
