Governor Fletcher Awards More Than $189,000 to Fight Drugs, Drunk Driving and Other Crimes
Grant money for police officers, criminal justice professionals and drug task force in NKY
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher and Justice & Public Safety Cabinet Secretary General Norman E. Arflack visited Independence today to award $189,306 in Law Enforcement Service Fee (LSF) and Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) money to the Independence Police Department and the Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force. The grant money will help protect families against drunk driving, drugs and other crimes.
“Tough talk on crime is not enough – we must be effective,” said Governor Fletcher. “These grants are a step in the right direction, helping officers defend innocent children and protect neighborhoods, friends and families against the blight of illegal drugs.”
“Law enforcement officers witness firsthand how illegal drugs can devastate entire communities,” said Justice Secretary General Norman E. Arflack. “The Justice & Public Safety Cabinet is dedicated to fighting crime across Kentucky, and these grants will help us do just that.”
The LSF program is state money that will help officers target drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs. JAG funding is federal money that will help law enforcement agencies, drug task forces and other criminal justice programs stop the spread of drugs and improve the quality of life in Kentucky. The General Fund will also provide drug task forces with $2 million over the biennium. Kentucky currently has 13 multi-jurisdictional drug task forces in operation that serve 48 counties across the commonwealth.
