Governor and First Lady to Host 2006 Commonwealth Veterans' Celebration
Fourth of July Celebration to be held on Capitol grounds
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor and Mrs. Ernie Fletcher will join the VFW Post 4075 and the city of Frankfort this Fourth of July for the 2006 Commonwealth Veterans’ Celebration, to be held for the first time on the Capitol grounds.
In addition to food, music and fireworks, the celebration will include a special program to honor our Veterans. That program will include a parade of troops, a presentation of colors and a Blackhawk flyover. Governor Fletcher will provide remarks during the program.
“As we celebrate our nation’s birth and the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, it is only appropriate that we recognize and honor those who are currently fighting for freedom as well as the many who selflessly served our country before them,” said Governor Fletcher. “The First Lady and I are honored to join the VFW and the city of Frankfort for this celebration.”
The Capitol grounds will be filled with something for everyone during this special event, which begins at 6 p.m. Patrons are welcome to spend the evening on the Capitol grounds enjoying their own picnics or purchasing refreshments from Tink’s Restaurant of Frankfort. Children will find an activity area dedicated just to them. Veterans and their families will have access to a special tent provided in their honor, and a special display of military vehicles will be on hand.
Live entertainment will include Frankfort band “The Shining” and Georgetown country artist George Molton. At dark, the evening’s activities will culminate in an impressive display of fireworks, visible in the skyline between the Governor’s Mansion and the Capitol.
“The Governor and I are looking forward to joining the Frankfort VFW and families from across Kentucky on the 4th of July at the Capitol for the Commonwealth Veterans Celebration,” said First Lady Glenna Fletcher. “The Capitol lawn will be a wonderful setting to celebrate and recognize the freedoms that our veterans enable us all to enjoy.”
This family event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs to lounge on the Capitol lawn.
