Governor Ernie Fletcher Directs Flags at State Offices at Half-Staff in Memory of Kentucky Soldier

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff in honor of Staff Sergeant Santiago Halsel.

According to the Department of Defense, Staff Sergeant Santiago M. Halsel, 32, of Bowling Green died of injuries sustained in Baghdad, Iraq, on May 16, when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting a dismounted clearance mission during combat operations.  Halsel was assigned to the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell.

Flags will remain at half-staff throughout the state until sunset on the day of Halsel’s funeral.

At this time, arrangements for funeral services are pending.
